Freedom to Enjoy Life

Co-op was canceled this week. I get an extra week to make my lessons even better. So instead of highlighting a fellow writer today, I decided to share a few pictures and tell about some of what we’ve been doing.

dirt

This past month, I’ve been making sure my children have ample opportunity to just be children. One of their favorite places to play is over at the nearby ranch where our oldest son works as an apprentice.

The day after Hannah’s birthday we all went over to visit the animals. Of course they had high hopes of getting to ride a horse too.

But while they waited to ride a horse their imaginations took over.

Jonathan

Hannah

Hannah found a saddle on a stand she could ride.

Ruth

Ruth just loves any horse she can hug. Especially the babies.

Joshua

Joshua has been learning a lot while working as an apprentice. He was proud to be able to show us how to put a saddle on a horse.

Elijah

Elijah’s favorite part seemed to be watching the pigeons and chickens that were in their coop.

Elisabeth

Elisabeth didn’t let all the excitement get in the way of a good nap.

I love to see my children growing and learning.

They need these opportunities to be free to learn on their own and in their own way within the eyesight of a loving parent that won’t let them get hurt.

Ah, yes! I can learn something from my children.

Maybe I could use to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Let my hair down. Enjoy freedom under the steady watch of my loving Heavenly Father who is always with me. He’s always within reach. Any time I fall down God’s right there to lift me up and dust me off.

What do you plan to do to enjoy life today? I’d love to hear your ideas.

I may just forget chores this afternoon and go play outside barefoot with my kids. The dishes will still be here when I get back.

Here For My Children

photo (1)I am linking up again at Lisa-Jo’s for another Five Minute Friday.

The rules are

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

Today’s word prompt is “Here”.

My timer is set.

GO!

Here I am with a baby in my lap. Wondering if I can have a few extra minutes for typing a little encumbered. But I won’t I’m sitting here thinking about why I am here.

I am here for a reason. There is a reason I choose to type. God gave me my beautiful family. I have many friends online and in real life.

I am happy here. I have my baby here sleeping in my arms. I like having my children here with me. Even when they try to distract or draw my attention from what I am doing here. I know they are the reason I am doing this. I remind myself of that and I stop and listen. If I am doing this for them then I can stop typing for them too.

But here in this moment I have five minutes of quiet granted to me by 5 of my 6 children and I type.

Stop

This is my second time to do Five Minute Friday. I did it in one take this time.

Now your turn. What are you doing “here”?

Please share with us in the comments. If you participated in today’s Five Minute Friday, let me know and I’d love to check out your post.

“Dare to Dream”

bookcoverI am teaching a creative writing class in our Homeschool Co-op.

For those that don’t know a Homeschool Cooperative is a group of homeschooling families that get together to have classes for their children. Each parent in the Co-op volunteers to help out or teach a class.  This co-op I volunteered to teach Creative Writing for 6-12 grades and Creative Reading for 1st – 5th grades.

I called the second class Creative Reading because it is basically a Creative Writing class with less writing. I didn’t know what level of writers I would have in the 1st – 5th grades.

I am covering several genres of writing styles in my class and so I invited several of my Tribe Writer friends to contribute to my class.

This week I introduced the subject of writing with a wonderful book by Joan Hall entitled “Dare to Dream”.

This book was a perfect start for teaching Creative Writing in that she talks about Dreams. Although she focuses on the dream of writing her book is applicable for any dream.

Joan’s book really resonated with me. She talks about the start of her dreams. She describes the steps she took to fulfill them.

Like me she wanted to be a writer as a child. And also myself Joan didn’t really start seeing herself as a writer until she was grown.

Joan challenges us to Dare to Dream. If we work at it, one day we will see those dreams come true.

Joan Hall is an amazing photographer as well as writer. Her book is complemented with beautiful photography and inspirational quotes through out.

And to top it all off Dare to Dream is free to subscribers of Joan’s blog.

Go check it out and let me know what you think!

This was a great book to kick start my co-op classes. I want the children in my classes to reach for their dreams while they are still young. Sometimes we just need to have someone come alongside us and say, “Hey! This is how you get there.”

My Easter Confession of Procrastination

Easter 2013

Yes. They can stand still for at least one picture. You just got to keep the camera snapping to actually catch the perfect shot.

Me procrastinate? Surely not!

I know y’all find that hard to believe. Yes,I am a preacher’s wife and I procrastinate.

Aren’t my children beautiful all dressed up in their Easter clothes?

Let me tell you what all it took to get that picture.

It all began on my husband’s payday in the month of March.

“Sweetheart, how much money can I spend this month to buy the kids new clothes for Easter?”

“However much you need. We should have enough.” He replied.

So you see, I did think about buying the kids’ new clothes.

Fast forward to the Saturday before Easter Sunday.

I had been talking all week about needing to pick a day to go shopping with the kids. Saturday morning my husband decided he could take the boys to go clothes shopping.

That sounded great to me. Divide and conquer!

He take half the children and I take the other half.  So they left in his van to buy clothes. They had been gone several hours, when I decided to call and check on them. My husband’s phone doesn’t always work in the store so I called my son’s phone.

“Hi, Joshua!”

“Hi!”

“I’m just calling to check on y’all. How are things going?”

“Fine. Dad doesn’t like shopping for clothes.”

“I understand. Are y’all almost done?’

“Almost.”

My husband called me and informed me that he had been in the store too long. “Let me out of here!”

At some point in talking with him, I realized that I didn’t have to wait for them to get back. The girls and I have our own vehicle!

The boys got back and I took the girls.

I knew that it was going to be hard to find dresses that meet our dress code.

  • Our rule is dresses have to come below the knees.
  • Shirts can’t show the belly when arms are raised. We call that the belly test. Any time a shirt gets too small one of us will comment, “I don’t think that shirt will pass the belly test.”
  • I require that shirts have sleeves. Not just straps. So if they buy a dress with straps they must have a shirt over or under it.
  • I do allow shorts and pants but the same rule applies. They must come below the knees and not be too tight.

That may sound strict but in this world of vastly decaying morals it is good to hold yourself and your family to a higher level. I set up the rules along time ago when my oldest daughter was very young. It met my husband’s approval and my children understand that these are the rules.

So Saturday afternoon, the day before Easter I have to find 3 dresses that meet those requirements and still look nice.

I took the girls to a clothing store in our little town.  After several trips to the dressing room, they found what they wanted.

The boys were color coordinated with purple and grays. The girls…pink and white.

“Mom, you should find a dress to match us!”

Okay…. I should just end this story right here… You do not want to know my experience with dress shopping, do you?

You do? Okay… Some do some don’t. If you don’t want to know, let’s just suffice it to say that it’s not the same when your in your late 30’s and not as skinny as you used to be.

Now that’s the short story. My feelings won’t be hurt if you can imagine it and want to stop right there.

Still reading?

I made the mistake of agreeing to try on clothes. My daughters had the baby in her stroller and were walking laps inside the store while I tried clothes on.

I don’t think clothing designers had me at all in mind when they made those clothes. The clothes that came close to fitting me showed my knobby knees.  The clothes that were long enough to hide those same knees I couldn’t even get pulled up over my thighs.

I tried on the same shirt my older daughter is wearing in the picture. It looks very pretty on her. I chose the largest size available in that shirt. Now I know why women wear shirts so tight. They don’t make shirts bigger!

After several failed attempts with different styles, I had to start pep talking myself to calm my emotions.

I told myself that it was okay. Maybe there are so many other women with my dimensions that my sizes were sold out.  If I had gone shopping sooner I would have found something. I’ll start exercising and my reward for all the weight I will lose will be a new dress.

We stopped at another store for accessories. I like to look at clearance racks. I found a shirt in my normal style on the clearance rack for $2. I didn’t even bother to try it on. And that was my beautiful Easter shirt in our family picture.

Have you ever waited until the last minute to do something and it still worked out okay? Maybe not as well as you would have liked but you were at least happy with the end result.

You may have noticed (if you pay attention to those details) that my two younger sons were not wearing dress shoes in the above picture.  They outgrow their shoes so fast that they wind up wearing their tennis shoes to church. Since I procrastinated, I ran out of time to buy them dress shoes.

Okay, maybe procrastinating isn’t such a good thing after all.

Broken

Today, I’m trying something new. I am joining other writers and linking up with Lisa Jo Baker for her Five Minute Friday link up. Lisa Jo gives us a word prompt and we set our timers and write for only 5 minutes without over thinking and no editing.

Now if my kids will just give me 5 minutes today’s word prompt is Broken.

Alright timer is set… On my mark… Get Set… Go…

Ha Ha okay so this is my first time to do this and it wasn’t as easy as it looks. LOL I only had one paragraph and it was terrible. So I know. I know… But I’m going to try that again. LOL I guess my brain was broken. 😉

Here we go again. Timer is set.  Ready… Set… Go…

Hannah and Jonathan fixing a broken chair.

Hannah is using the hammer she got for her birthday to fix our broken chair with Jonathan’s help.

If it’s not broken don’t fix it. However in our world today we need to be aware of things that are broken. If we don’t realize we have an area in our life that is broken we will never fix it. We need to know when we are broken.

It’s like a chair that has a broken leg. If we don’t realize that chair is broken then we won’t fix it. We might sit down in it and wind up broken ourselves. On the other hand if we saw that it is broken but don’t fix it and just turn a blind eye to the problem then someone else might be hurt by our lack of caring.

We need to see those things in our lives too. We need to know the areas that are broken in our lives. It reminds me of the verse where Jesus taught we need to remove the beam from our own eye before we can remove the speck that is in our brother’s eye.

Before we can help other broken people we need to realize where we are broken. It is good to help others but we first need to work on our own broken areas.

Stop.

Okay, I’m leaving that one. LOL I don’t think it was too bad for my first time.

If you’re interested in reading other bloggers’ Five Minute Friday posts click on the link and check it out. If you decide to join in please leave me a comment and let me know and I’ll be sure to check out your post as well.

Have you ever come to the realization in your life that there was something broken and took the steps necessary to fix it? As always feel free to share with me in the comments.

Five Minute Friday

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5)

Finding Beauty in Imperfections

These are a few bonus pictures that I want to share from the dentist appointment we had the other day.
JonathanThis is 5 year old Jonathan. He is our budding photographer.

2013-03-21 14.35.01-2This is where we can be thankful for modern digital cameras. Back in the day of film developing, I probably would have just tossed these pictures.

Instead I’m embracing my son’s creativity and posting his pictures on my blog.

2013-03-21 14.05.54Sometimes we just have to find the fun in life. And smile.

These pictures may not be perfect but neither am I. However I see the beauty in these pictures despite all their imperfections. phoneThat’s one step in building a strong rock solid family. We need to be able to see the beauty in the imperfections.

Our children need to see that we love them, even when they make mistakes. They need to know we are proud of them even though they are not perfect. We must show them that they are still beautiful, inside and out.

How about you? Have you found beauty in the imperfections?

Feel free to share with me in the comments. If you received this in your email, you may also hit reply and I’ll email you back as soon as I am able.

Today is Hannah’s birthday. Hopefully things run smoother than they did on Elijah’s Birthday last week. At least I have eggs now. 😉  But a perfect day or not I’ll be sure to post about the beauty I find in it.

Adventures with 6 Kids at the Dentist’s

I received a call from our Family dentist Wednesday afternoon confirming our appointment for the next day.

I didn’t even pretend to hide my shock. I forgot!

The kind receptionist just laughed and said that she was glad she called. I assured her we would be there.

20130322-005439.jpg

Elisabeth is playing peek-a-boo while Jonathan is putting his big brother’s hat on my head.

Yes. Living in Plan B a second time this week. What were my original plans for Thursday? I don’t know anymore.

I do know that my plan wasn’t driving 5 hours round trip with 6 children for their 4 hour dentist appointment.

This is not my kids’ first dentist appointment. It’s just the first one I forgot about.

Then I got a call from my dad saying the Dentist office just called to confirm his appointment and told him, he was going to see some grandchildren.

A squeal of excitement arose throughout the house as the kids realized Papa had a dentist appointment too.

20130322-005836.jpg

Jonathan sat in Nana’s chair. He told her she could sit on his lap.

Something good happened with Plan B. My dad told me that he was just as excited as the kids.

Entertaining the kids wasn’t nearly as challenging with Papa and Nana in the waiting room.

You know…That surprise was a gift from God. He knew I was a bit apprehensive about the long drive and the long hours of waiting with my kids.

It’s like He gave me a hug and told me that it’s all going to be okay.

This is how the 3 youngest and I looked by the end of the wait.

This is how the 3 youngest and I looked by the end of the wait.

Have you ever felt that way?On those days, weeks, or even months when nothing seems to go as planned. Have you ever had a surprise that made you feel loved despite all your shortcomings?

As always feel free to share with me in the comments. Or send me an email.

Oh, and as an added plus to my day. My husband installed a new calendar app for me. Now to just start using it. 🙂

Elijah’s 3rd Birthday!!!

Monday morning, I checked my messages as part of my normal morning routine. Someone had mentioned that Sunday was St. Patrick’s day. Okay, I missed that. However that post jogged my memory. I immediately sent my husband a text message that read, “Tomorrow is Elijah’s birthday!!!!!!!!!! I forgot!!!” Elijah

Yes, I know. I forgot my son’s 3rd birthday until the day before. If it had not been for that post about St. Patricks’ day I would have probably forgotten it all together until the day after. But that is the beauty of being 3. He didn’t know it was his birthday either. At least until I announced it was the next day on Monday morning. Then he was really excited.

Monday night as we got the kids to bed I gave Elijah his last 2 year old hug. That is a fun tradition we have on Birthday Eves. We give them their last hug for that year of life and the next morning we give them their first hug for the new birth year.

I wanted to write a blog post but had been having problems with my blog not posting to Facebook properly. Monday evening, I showed my tech savvy husband all of my blog problems. He came to my rescue and found the root of my problem.Elijah gifts

It was in the beautiful theme I had picked out. He changed it to a simple theme for me. He didn’t have time to fix it much. He has to get up early for work in the mornings. So I thanked him for his help.

But then I made a mistake… I looked at my blog.

I should have waited until morning but I didn’t, I had to fix it right then. I stayed up until 3 a.m. on Elijah’s birthday trying to figure out what the best, most practical yet most beautiful theme for my blog would be. I looked through a lot of themes.

Did I find one? No. But I decided I would work on that later. So I left my poor ugly blog like it was and went on to bed. That was the beginning of Elijah’s birthday. I was determined I wasn’t going to let an ugly blog worry me anymore that day.

Monday morning, I couldn’t remember my husband leaving for work. It’s my normal habit to wake up and tell him good bye before he leaves. Sometimes we may even have a little time to chat a bit before he has to rush out the door.

But not Monday morning. I woke up once when my older daughter, Ruth brought me Elisabeth. Then I fell asleep for a little bit and woke up to a phone ring. No they didn’t call too early. I slept too late. But there was a problem on the farm my son works as an apprentice and they were wondering if they could pick both Joshua and Ruth up to help them deworm goats. I was fine with that.

I immediately started making plans for the rest of Elijah’s day. Here is how my imagined day looked.

  1. Record a video of Elijah talking on his 3rd birthday.
  2. Decorate Birthday eggs. We had been given an Easter egg kit but we don’t celebrate Resurrection Sunday with Easter eggs nor Easter bunnies. Why is another blog post in itself.
  3. Bake a birthday cake. Elijah had picked Chocolate cake with chocolate icing. I even planned to let him help ice it.
  4. Scott gets off work, picks up some toys for presents, and picks up the kids from their work. Then we eat cake.
  5. We go to the Library and check out books
  6. We go to a restaurant and have burgers and ice cream.

So that was my original plan. Anyone that knows me will realize that I hardly have any of my plans go as planned.

I am a firm believer in the verse that says.

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” James 4:15

Because if I don’t say that I’d be in trouble. My plans rarely work out.

Here is how the day actually went. I came into the kitchen once all the younger kids woke up.

  1. I got the video recorded after about 10 takes of him being goofy. He finally answered my questions while riding on the top of the chair like it were a horse. I posted the video on YouTube. —> Elijah’s 3rd Birthday Interview
  2. Went to the refrigerator… No eggs!
  3. I couldn’t bake a cake without eggs. So I thought we might go to the store.
  4. No time to go to the store before Scott got off work. So I texted him to pick up eggs and snack cakes to cover for the lack of my not having baked a cake.
  5. The library closed at 6. My husband had only been home 30 minutes.
  6. We did go out for burgers!

We ate the snack cakes and gave Elijah his present first but we did go to the restaurant.Birthday Crowns

Elijah was very proud of himself. He went up into the play place without any fear and came down announcing “I did it! I did it!” All the pictures I took of him in the play place were blurry.  But we had a great time and they were able to have refills on the slushees.

That night everyone was ready for bed… Except me.

I wanted to blog about all the deep and wonderful thoughts I had going around in my mind. I ended the night typing and looking at my screen as it blurred from my eyes crossing. Then I decided at 3 a.m. it was time for bed and my blog could wait.

And is this the blog post I wrote in the middle of the night? No. I just now typed this in about 30 minutes after accomplishing the one task I was determined to conquer. I had everyone to bed before 10 so I could sit here and type a quick 15 minute blog post. Yes it took 30 minutes but I feel really good about it right now. I am going to bed early tonight!

How about you? Have you ever had all your plans for a day unravel right before your eyes? Do you wing “plan B” when you get to it? Or are you well prepared before hand?

I’d love for you to share you experiences with me in the comments. Maybe you have some advice that might help me get my plans better laid out.

If you are one of my subscribers and are reading this in your email you can just hit reply. I’d like hearing from you that way as well.

Building Memories

This week was Spring Break! My husband had most of the week off so we were able to take a short trip and have some fun with our kids.

Here are a few pictures I took this week.

I told them to pretend the sun wasn't in their face.

I told them to pretend the sun wasn’t in their face.

I said we built memories with the kids.  We didn’t necessarily get good pictures of them. 🙂

We took this picture at the zoo.

We took this picture at the zoo.

I tried to get the kids to all look at the camera at the same time but Elisabeth looked away in this picture. Some of the others were looking away in the one picture she actually looked at the camera in.

Elijah is going down a really cool slide that lets you see under the water.

Elijah is going down a really cool slide that lets you see under the water.

Everyone had a really good time. We didn’t lose any of the kids. The only panic moment was when Jonathan panicked at the water’s edge of the slide that you see in this picture of Elijah.

Jonathan was scared to go under the water in the slide. But once we coaxed him through it he went down once with Ruth. Then he was willing to go down it again and again all by himself.

Jonathan finally slid down the tunnel. With a smile on his face.

Jonathan finally slid down the tunnel with a smile on his face.

Even Elisabeth got to go down the slide with Daddy's help.

Even Elisabeth got to go down the slide with Daddy’s help.

Scott took Elisabeth down the slide. She seemed to like it pretty well.

Scott went with the kids inside a small cave.

Scott went with the kids inside a small cave.

My Motto: If you have trouble taking good pictures just take a lot of them!

Finally one last picture for now.

I have a whole lot more but I’ll save the rest for future posts.

There was a little playground area where the kids posed for me on top of a snake tunnel.

There was a little playground area where the kids posed on top of a snake tunnel.

Even the picture on top of the snake was a bit of a flop. Jonathan’s hand is in front of his face. 🙂

I’ll spare you the picture of my wounded elbow. I cut myself on the passenger side mirror. It’s a pretty good little gash but it’s starting to heal now.

I was so glad it was me and not one of the kids that got hurt during the day. I hate hurting myself but I hate it worse when my kids are hurt.

Have you ever had a vacation or trip where you had a good time but none of the pictures were good? Or am I the only one that ever happens to? As always feel free to share with me in the comments.

This is a rather short and hurried post catching you up with what we’ve been doing this week.

I have a book I am working on that I’ll be sharing with my followers. I also  have a guest post to write and will be sharing that with you as well.

I am stepping out and trying new things. Thanks for following and listening!

My 10 Favorite Inspirational Quotes

There are so many good quotes in the world it’s hard to just pick a few. As a child I quoted everything from “Rain Rain go away” to “If at first you don’t succeed try try again.” I don’t use those childhood quotes so much anymore but I was challenged by a fellow Tribe Writer on his blog post at Positive Writer to write a blog about my favorite quotes.

It took me a while to come around to it but I decided I’d take up the challenge.

photo

Papa and Nana with the kids

As a grand-daughter of 2 preachers, a daughter of 1 preacher, a sister to a preacher, a sister-in-law to another preacher, and let’s not forget I am a preacher’s wife as well…

Obviously a few of my favorite quotes come from the Bible. Here is one such quote I like as a writer.

My tongue is a pen of a ready writer.“~Psalm 45:1

Sometimes I reverse it and say, “My pen is the tongue of a ready speaker.”

Ever since I was a child I loved the adventures of Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. I still enjoy reading her books over
and over again. One of the biggest things I got from her books and think about when I make a new friend that I relate with is

If a person sees eye to eye with you, and has pretty much the same taste in jokes – why then he belongs to the race that knows Joseph.”
“Oh, I understand,” exclaimed Anne, light breaking in upon her. “It’s what I used to call and still call in quotation marks ‘kindred spirits’.
“~Anne of the Island by L. M. Montgomery

Just like Anne, I find friends that even on the first meeting I realize are a “kindred spirit”. They are someone that understands me. Other people might look at me funny but a “kindred spirit” just knows.

Here is another favorite Bible quote:

Therefore if thine enemy be hungry, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good.“~Romans 12:20-21

As a child I added a little emphasis to the “heaping coals of fire” part. Now I try to focus more on “overcoming evil with good”.

Here’s another Bible quote that I frequently use on the kids. This one you have to imagine Captain Kirk’s phraseology a bit.

The rod and reproof giveth wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother shame.” ~Proverbs 29:15

You have to understand that I’m not angry when I quote that one to my kids. I use that one when they’ve been goofing off while my back was turned. That’s my pre-getting-them-back-on-task quote.

The kids usually respond that I sound like Papa. But they do return to work after my sermonette about what that verse means.
391670_371545589589291_1175040226_n
This next quote, I use while cleaning out my refrigerator, comes from my dad. I don’t know if he actually coined it but he is the only one I’ve heard use it.

When in doubt, throw it out.“~ Paul Clark

That probably goes along with “better safe than sorry.”

This morning I am up early during a 30 day challenge with a few friends that are also taking the challenge. We’re reading a book by another Tribe Writing friend entitled Early to Rise.

20130301-082340.jpg

Jonathan and Elisabeth

So this morning another couple of quotes come to my mind.

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.” ~ Proverbs 6:10-11 also Proverbs 24:33-34

That verse is not saying to never sleep but it brings another of my dad’s quotes to mind.

Girl, you’re going to sleep your whole day away!“~ Paul Clark

I intend to not sleep my day away.

20130301-084008.jpg

My Parents: Paul and Janie Clark

Here is another I have had to repeat to myself many times.

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. ~ Proverbs 29:25

I could go on and on with Bible quotes. I’ll just give you a couple more.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 4:19

This one I think of whenever we don’t have the money to buy something we really need. God always provides.

Finally, one quote that I’ve given a lot of devotions on:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the
evil thereof.
” ~ Matthew 6:33-34
